The Nyanya Project Update:
January 2008

Recent News

You have no doubt read and heard on the news that the situation in Kenya has been volatile at worst and unsettled at best since the election there in late December. In the cities, especially in the slums of Nairobi, where some of our nyanya live, the biggest threat has been lack of food and general disruption to daily life.

Will the Recent News Affect The Nyanya Project Mission?

No, the fundamental grassroots mission of The Nyanya Project is to care for grandmothers who care for their grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. Although our initial efforts have been in Kenya, if the political situation makes it impossible for us to continue our work there in the short term, we already have programs in development in Tanzania and potential sites elsewhere in Africa. Long term plans are for programs internationally.

Will the Recent News Affect The Nyanya Project’s short term operations?

Yes. A trip by the founder and vice president scheduled for early January was rescheduled for March. However, we have been able to provide emergency funds to two of our programs. In Nairobi, we sent funds for food distribution to those in Kibera, one of the hardest hit areas. Some 50 families will now receive food, including our nyanya who live there. For another of our programs, funds have been sent to provide daily care, clothes and school fees for nine orphans whose grandmothers brought them to the home of one of our Kenyan partners for safety. Funds will also allow her to check on our grandmothers in Kisumu in western Kenya, where violence has also erupted. Our people in Kenya report that everyone involved in The Nyanya Project is well and all are praying for peace. Donations received in this time of crisis will further our goal of providing security to grandmothers of AIDS orphans who are already overburdened.
