Development Team in Tanzania
Light in Africa is an orphanage in Moshi, Tanzania that was founded by Mama Lynn Elliott in 2000. It is registered as an NGO in the U.K. Upon visiting Light in Africa last summer, TNP became aware of its critical need for transportation for its many services. Light in Africa, located very near Mt. Kilimanjaro in the northern part of Tanzania, serves orphans in the Moshi area. It provides shelter for orphans, purchases school supplies, provides free medical consultations and medications, and it supplies food to neighboring households. It is in desperate need of a van to transport grandmothers of AIDS orphans to the orphanage to be with their grandchildren until they can care for their orphans in their own homes. The van is also needed to transport orphans to medical appointments and to deliver food and medicines to the grandmothers’ households. Visit: www.lightinafrica.org.
GOIG is a vocational crafts center located on the outskirts of Tanzania’s capital, Dar Es Salaam. TNP was introduced to GOIG by Diane White, Chief Strategist for the Buyer Linkages Program of the US African Development Foundation. GOIG (Getting Old is To Grow) was founded in 1999 by Grace Matemba, a widow with seven grandchildren, who wanted to help train women in craft production. GOIG makes beautiful sisal table mats, carpets, hammocks, tie-dyed fabrics and home accessories. More than 100 people are trained here, and Mary Mzeru, who directs GOIG, will help TNP to identify an initial 40 grandmothers of AIDS orphaned grandchildren in the area. These women will be trained and will receive ongoing revenue to help care for their grandchildren. TNP will help market the grandmothers’ crafts in Africa and America.
