The Nyanya Agricultural Projects, Jabana Hills

The fall of 2012 will continue to bring positive change to more than 60 grandmothers in the Jabana Hills of Rwanda. New grandmothers of AIDS orphans have been identified by program manager, Kassim Mbarushima, a licensed attorney and recent graduate of Generation Rwanda’s university scholarship program for Genocide orphans and other deserving students in Rwanda.

Kassim is a good friend of Simon Mvunabandi, who has worked as TNP’s Project Manager for the last three years and now works for the AIDS programs operated by the Clinton Global Initiative in Rwanda. With Simon’s help, the two young men visit the hills and the word of mouth goes out – TNP is starting new programs. The women come in large groups, hoping to be part of our programs.

The agricultural programs will launch with pepper growing. The grandmothers will be trained by a licensed agronomist for two weeks and their profits will be shared among members of their cooperative. Once these 60 women have finished their training, TNP plans to launch a mushroom growing project and beekeeping project for an additional 60 grandmothers in the area in the spring of 2013.

The women are eager to learn these skills and make life easier for their families.

Kassim has dedicated his energies to making sure that life becomes stronger for the women of Jabana, and Eugene Nyagahene, Rwanda’s leading entrepreneur and new TNP Board member, will help in marketing their products.

By summer, 2013, there will be almost 200 grandmothers who have been trained by TNP outside of Kigali. You can see it in their faces – their motivation is to make life better for their grandchildren. They are eager to learn the skills to help them do just that. They show up, they smile, and they’ll tell you how they want the future for their children to be different than theirs.
