Development Team

The initial startup of grandmothers’ cooperatives in Kenya and Tanzania in 2007 was actualized because of several key people and organizations – mostly NGOs which were already operating in these countries and were very receptive to The Nyanya Project’s vision of launching grandmothers programs where these organizations were already operating.

Because of their assistance, TNP has been operating in the Nairobi slums of Kibera and the small towns of Ndathi near Mt. Kenya since 2007.  In Kenya, urban grandmothers are trained in business skills that quadruple their income from the operation of their small vegetable stands, and since 2008, eight TNP grandmothers have also worked part-time in The Nyanya Preschool in the Kibera slums.  Beginning in 2007, the “sheep grandmothers” in Ndathi tend herds of sheep and cows provided by TNP to increase income for their famiiies.  Since the launch of these initial programs, TNP has expanded programs in Tanzania and Rwanda.  In Tanzania, we have trained approximately 120 grandmothers in craftsmaking in Dar Es Salaam and in business skills in Mwanza.  In Rwanda, we have trained 15 grandmothers in beadsmaking and are launching four agricultural programs that will train another 120 grandmothers in the Jabana Hills outside of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali.

Without the help of these organizations, TNP could not have been launched so swiftly or with such confidence. With their support and guidance, we are witnessing real change for hundreds of grandmothers –going forward, our programs will continue to grow in size and in new locations.

In all TNP projects, grandmothers receive instruction and printed materials (in Swahili) about the proper care of HIV-infected family members, as well as printed materials and instruction about operating sustainable, micro-finance programs to address their family’s needs.
